Communicating the Unbuilt: Pei Cobb Freed & Partners Projects in VR

Communicating the Unbuilt is a series taking place at several architecture offices during Archtober. Each will be a combination of lecture and interactive audience immersion using virtual reality technology.

The event at Pei Cobb Freed & Partners will begin with a 30 minute presentation on current projects and how they leverage virtual reality technology to improve communication and delivery of ideas. After the presentation, attendees will be invited to explore the 3D models highlighted in the presentation in virtual reality. Cocktails and light hors d’oeuvres will be provided. The event is limited to 50 attendees. Registration is required. The event will be hosted at the Pei Cobb Freed & Partners office in the Financial District.

International African American Museum, Charleston, South Carolina

The International African American Museum serves and celebrates the Museum’s mission by granting primacy to the seascape on which it fronts, the landscapes that frame it, and the memorial for which it provides shelter. The museum is housed in a one-story building volume measuring 82 feet wide, 426 feet long, and 37 feet high, raised 13 feet above the ground on a double row of cylindrical columns. Its underside shelters a large outdoor space that is the heart of the site’s collective memory. Under its eastern section, oriented to the harbor and ocean beyond, a shallow reflecting pool signifies the edge of Gadsden’s Wharf as it was at the beginning of the nineteenth century, when the slave trade was at its peak.

Marion Anderson Building, UCLA Anderson School of Management

The new Marion Anderson Building, an expansion to the original UCLA Anderson School of Management complex that was designed by Pei Cobb Freed & Partners in 1995, will provide much-needed resources for the school and improve its campus identity. The project’s 60,000 s/f of new construction will include a 200-seat lecture hall, large classrooms and associated informal meeting and interactive break-out spaces.
